Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a serious disease affecting the joints and bones. It is classified as an autoimmune disease which is a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the body’s joints, linings, and cartilage. This causes swelling, inflammation, and pain and can reduce a person’s mobility and cause loss of function. Early diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis is important as it has been found that treatment results are best if symptoms are treated early and aggressively. While RA most often affects the hands, feet, knees, and ankles, it can also affect other parts of the body. It is estimated that approximately 1½ million people in the United States suffer from RA with women being three times more likely than men to have the condition.
The disease generally occurs between the ages of 30 to 60 years old. At the present time, there are no cures for RA although there are medications available which can help relieve its symptoms. Physical therapy is also sometimes recommended as part of an overall RA treatment plan. In some cases, surgery is recommended to help alleviate RA related problems. Even the consumption of fish and plant oils have shown some promising results.
