Clostridium Difficile, or C-Diff as it is generally called, is a common bacteria present all around us that can infect a person’s intestines. If left untreated, severe inflammation, diarrhea, and other symptoms can develop. Although medical trials are underway to test C-Diff vaccines, there is no currently licensed vaccine available. Those individuals most susceptible to severe C-Diff infections are the elderly who have spent extended periods in a health facility or nursing home. While older adults tend to be most at risk, Web MD website reports there are a growing number of young adults developing infections.
Severe C-Diff infections cause inflammation of the bowels or colitis resulting in acute diarrhea. If the condition is not treated quickly, it could lead to dehydration and other serious problems, such as changes in blood pressure and kidney function. In general, symptoms include severe diarrhea, cramps, fever, dehydration, and rapid heart rates.
DM Clinical Research is currently collaborating with Martin Diagnostic Clinic to conduct medical trials of a new C-Diff vaccine designed to control C-Diff symptoms and associated diseases. As there is no currently licensed vaccine, these medical trials are essential in improving C-Diff treatments.
DM Clinical Research is currently recruiting patients to participate in these important C-Diff medical trials. To be considered as a participant you should be 50 years of age or older and be able to answer ‘Yes’ to any of the following questions:
- Have you been hospitalized in the last 12 months?
- Have you had to emergency room visits in the past 12 months?
